Targeting Tumor Metabolism to Trigger Cancer Cell Death - with Support From The H Foundation!
The H Foundation is proud to have provided part of the funding for a promising new study on dealing with treatment-resistant cancer cells.
Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study describes a treatment approach that exploits cancer cells' hidden metabolic vulnerabilities in order to kill them.
Shad Thaxton, MD, PhD
Senior study author Shad Thaxton, a member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, stated: “Previously, we showed that a drug that we are developing to treat cancer, a synthetic lipoprotein particle, was highly effective at killing cancer cells by a mechanism consistent with ferroptosis. In this work, we utilized a powerful genetic screening tool to better understand how our drug is working to kill cancer cells.”
Sophia Lamperis, a PhD student in the Driskill Graduate Program in Life Sciences (DGP), was the first author of the study. Additional Feinberg co-authors included Navdeep Chandel, PhD, the David W. Cugell, MD, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care; and Daniela Matei, MD, the Diana, Princess of Wales Professor of Cancer Research and chief of Reproductive Science in Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Chandel, Matei and Gordon are also members of the Lurie Cancer Center.
